Thanks to a link passed around FaceBook a few weeks ago I discovered “Finding Arthur” by Adam Ardrey. I have been an avid reader of Arthuriana since I devoured “The Once and Future King” by T.H. White when I was in middle school a Looooooong time ago. While no scholar, I am fairly well versed in the traditional Mallory type stories set in a high medieval period, but I’ve read more into an historical Arthur and never been satisfied with the way “scholars” stretch linguistics and place names to fit their theories. I even wrote my own version in “Guardian of the Balance, Merlin’s Descendants#1″ Ardrey’s arguments for a Scottish based Arthur is compelling. His knowledge of both Q Celtic and P Celtic is extensive enough that he doesn’t have to stretch to find reasonable assumptions. And they are reasonable. As a pretend historian I appreciate his bold statements where he draws conclusions, admitting that after 1500 years hard facts are difficult to find. It’s an easy read compared to a lot of the more scholarly attempts to tackle this subject. I’ve enjoyed the first half of the book so much I ordered the companion book “Finding Merlin.”
• What did you recently finish reading?
I am addicted to cozy mysteries. They are my popcorn books. Most recently I finished “Dead Man Waltzing” by Ella Barrick. I’d read “Quickstep to Murder.” As a dancer and fan of many of the dance programs on TV I appreciate the look into the life of a ballroom dance teacher and competitor. The mysteries are plausible and the heroine’s involvement in solving the mystery is also plausible. I’m looking forward to “Homicide Hustle.” This series hasn’t had time to grow stale yet.
• What do you think you’ll read next?
This is a toss up. I have more cozy mysteries calling my name, specifically “The Twelve Clues of Christmas” by Rhys Bowen. The Royal Spyness Mysteries take place during the great depression when noble young adults who have no inheritance left must make their own way in posh London, without embarrassing the family by admitting they have no money. Lady Georgiana Rannoch has royal connections and must solve mysteries discreetly and keep the royal connections out of the lurid press.
But rising to the top of my TBR on my Nook is “How Like a God” by our own Brenda Clough due to be release soon. I’ve read one of her short stories about Gilgamesh and am mightily curious.
