WWW Wednesday. This meme is from shouldbereading.

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

• What are you currently reading?

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen – Working my way through Austen again. This is probably her least accessible title to modern audiences, because some of the issues she addresses aren’t really relevant to current generations. Slavery, while it still exists and has left behind a strong legacy of hate in America, is not a current problem in the way Austen is looking at it (the morality of being a plantation owner, etc.). Her other main issue in this book is manners/morality, and the values she’s discussing are in many ways foreign to a modern audience. Still, her thoughtful examination of how people treat each other, for good or ill, is worth reading.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë – Reading this one for a book club. I have neglected the Brontës, and since Anne has also been rather neglected, I’m interested in her work.

Stopping Short by Mindy Klasky – This fun baseball romance, party of Klasky’s Diamond Brides series, came out yesterday from Book View Café.

• What did you recently finish reading?

Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl – Reichl is a gifted and entertaining storyteller, whom I first encountered in her wonderful Garlic and Sapphires. In this memoir she visits the influences throughout her lifetime that led her toward her career as a food critic and editor of Gourmet magazine. She illustrates various episodes with the recipes she learned at those times. A wonderful, sometimes frightening read.

• What do you think you’ll read next?

Probably Green by Jay Lake. I only met Jay once, but I’ll never forget his kindness or his cheerful energy. His very public battle against cancer was simply amazing to see, and he’s left an unforgettable legacy of courage and hope for other patients. I’ve been meaning to read Green and now it will be a bittersweet reading.

What about you? What are you reading, have you been reading, wanting to read next?
