Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. I am pleased to see a very successful women who is willing to use the F word — feminist, that is. I’ll have more to say about it in an essay I’m doing for the next issue of the Cascadia Subduction Zone.
Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall. This is an exquisitely written book and one that turns conventional history on its head. Thomas Cromwell is its hero; Thomas More its villain. But it left me feeling depressed. I find myself tired of kings who believe their subjects have a duty to them rather than believing that they should take care of their people.

Deb Taber’s Necessary Ill. This is a fascinating and very disturbing world, making it excellent science fiction. Jin, a neut — a neuter person — is spreading disease germs in an effort to reduce population. I find myself on Jin’s side, even as I am freaked out by its mission. I can’t wait to find out where all this goes.

I have a stack of books on hold at the library, so to some extent it depends on what comes in first. But high on my list right now is The Great Gatsby. I haven’t read it since high school, and I don’t recall being terribly impressed by it back then. But recently I heard people waxing rhapsodic about it on the radio, talking about Gatsby as a dreamer. Me, I always thought he had flawed dreams. I decided I needed to read it again to find out if my take on it is the right one.
